Hard To Believe

On the way into work this morning I was praying and was struck with the “revelation” of just how absurd the Christian faith is.  I mean just think about it for a minute … an eternal, all-powerful, omniscient, infinite, being loves us.    He cares for us so much that He became one of us to open the door for us to have a relationship with him.   This is so far-fetched that it is ridiculous to believe … or at least it would be … if it wasn’t absolutely true.

Why does God love us?  It is such a mystery.  We have nothing to offer Him.  He is perfect and we are hopelessly flawed.  He has all power and we are pathetically weak.  Yet the Bible clearly says that He does love us.  Not only does God love us, but He desires to have a relationship with us.  A RELATIONSHIP!  We are not just some work-force that He tolerates or pets for His amusement like fish in a tank … God wants us to get to know Him and interact with Him.

He is far above us.  His ways are not our ways.  We cannot understand Him except what He reveals about Himself.  Yet God calls us His children and desires that we spend intimate time with Him.  That is like a person deciding to have a relationship insect.  In fact, that is not a really fair comparison because an insect is closer to our level than we are to God.

As unimaginable as this is to believe, the Bible assures us that it is all true.  The Bible does not explain why God loves us, it just says He does.  Incredibly, Christians take God’s love for granted.  Worse yet, we ignore God in favor of other pursuits.  The Creator of the Universe, the King of Kings, and Lord of All invites us to spend time with Him and more often than not, we have “better” things to do.

I do not understand why God loves us, considering just how unworthy we are.  I am just grateful, but not grateful enough, that He does.

Thank you Lord for loving me!  Please forgive me for the times I ignore You because I am too busy or just otherwise engaged.  Graciously draw me closer to you and grant me the intimacy that You want and I need.
