Matthew 5:38-42

Matthew 5:38 – 42 You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Americans love their rights.  It is embedded in our Constitution and our national psyche.  That is why these verses cause so much angst among American Christians.  Jesus is stating that Christians should voluntarily surrender their rights for the sake of the gospel.

The obvious question when reading this passage is, “What will keep people from abusing me?”  The answer is … nothing.  Odds are if one truly chooses to live the kind of life Jesus calls for then they probably will be taken advantage of.

The better question would be, “Which is more important, protecting yourself or advancing the Kingdom of Heaven?”  Carefully consider the answer because it has major implication for eternity.  Jesus also said that the person who wanted to save their life would lose it and the person who surrenders their life would save it (Matthew 10:39).

Sacrifice is an integral part of the Christian life (Romans 12:1).  A part that is too often downplayed in the American church.  Living out the passage above definitely requires sacrifice but if we love and trust God the way we should, then it is a sacrifice we will willingly make.

Father, please give me a heart that seeks after You.  Help me to live sacrificially so that the world will see You!
