Matthew 8:16-17 ESV That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”
When people who were oppressed by demons were brought to Jesus He “cast out the spirits with a word.” He could do that because He had full authority over them. The demons had to obey Jesus. That should give us great comfort, peace, and boldness. God has full authority over the spiritual realm. Therefore, we do not need to fear the attacks of the devil and his minions.
There are two equally inaccurate and dangerous views among Christians regarding demons. One view ignores them completely. The opposite view makes demons the focus of our spiritual activity.
Christians should be aware of demons. We should have a basic understanding of what they do and how they act. Ignoring one’s enemy in a war is foolish. The Bible clearly states they exist, and they are actively plotting against God’s people. Demons are what we fight against when doing spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:12).
Demons are our enemy, and we should be aware of them, but Christians should not fear them or have an unhealthy fascination of them. Our focus should be on God.
Christians who gives demons to much attention often have the idea that the forces of Heaven and hell are like armies locked in a pitched battle to the death. That is inaccurate and gives the devil way to much credit. While demons are our enemies, they are not God’s enemies. They are opposed to Him and in rebellion against Him, but they are His subjects. He has complete authority over them.
Demons cannot act without God’s permission, and he sets the limits of what they can do (Job 1:8-12, Luke 22:31-32). Demons report to God from time to time (Job 1:6-7). God will even send demons on tasks when it suits His purposes (1 Kings 22:19-22).
The purpose of that last paragraph was to show how completely under God’s control the devil and his demons are. We do not need to fear them. Be aware of them and their schemes, yes. Fear, no.
Jesus cast out demons with a word and His word still commands them. Let us give Him our attention, reverence and fear. All we have to do is obey God and the demons are powerless against God’s plans.
Almighty God, You are the sovereign King of Glory. All power in heaven and earth belong to You. Strengthen my heart and give me courage to live victoriously over all who would stand against Your will.
