Matthew 10:1-4

Matthew 10:1-4 ESV And He called to Him His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.  The names of the twelve apostles are these: first Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.

We do not know why did Jesus choose these twelve men to invest in?  The Bible doesn’t tell us.  It wasn’t that they were the best or the brightest.  They were just ordinary men that God used to start the greatest movement the world have ever seen.

God does not look for the best candidates for a job.  He takes people who are unqualified and then gives them the ability.  Throughout the Bible God chose people who are least likely to be able to do what He calls them for and then He works through them to accomplish His goal.  Some examples are: God chose a man with a barren wife (Abraham) to be the father of His people.  He chose a man with a speech impediment (Moses) to be His spokesperson.  He selected a shepherd boy (David) to be king and a virgin (Mary) to give birth.

God is not concerned with our qualifications.  After all, He doesn’t really need us.  God is fully capable of accomplishing everything He wants to do without our involvement.  He includes us by choice, not necessity.  His main requirement is that the person be willing and obedient.

Do you feel God has called you to something you are not qualified for?  Have no fear, as you can see, you are in good company.  The only thing you should concern yourself with is whether or not you are willing to be obedient.  If you are willing to obey, then God can and will give you good works to do (Ephesians 2:10).  God has allowed me to participate in some amazing things in the last 25 years.  I have been blessed to engage in ministries that I was far from capable of doing but God made them successful because I was willing to obey His call.

Since God calls us to reach beyond our ability it is often scary to obey.  We know we can’t do it so often times we are reluctant to try.  However, if we trust God, and commit ourselves to obey His leading then we can find ourselves in amazing places doing awesome things.  Then God will get all the glory because it will be obvious that He did it all.

Thank You Lord for letting me be a part of the work You are accomplishing.  Give me the courage to always follow where You lead despite my own fears and inadequacies.  Give me the faith to trust You to cause everything to happen according to Your will.
