Lately the word “contagious” is used a lot. By definition, “contagious” means to spread from one person or organism to another. Depending on the situation, that could be a good or bad thing. There are many things other than viruses that can be contagious. Fear is contagious, so is laughter. Attitudes, both good and bad, can be contagious.
Right now, fear is pretty contagious. Frightened people are instilling fear in others. I do not want to minimize the seriousness of COVID-19, but acting out of fear causes people to make irrational decisions. Panic buying has led to unnecessary shortages. Fear has led to armed men in Maine attempting to barricade two men in their house. Fear has spiked harassment and violence towards Asian people.
God created us to have fear as a safety measure. It is good to be afraid of a growling dog or a raging fire. That way we will treat them carefully. Proper fear will cause us to be appropriately cautious in dangerous situations. When fear takes control though, it can create even greater dangers.
As Christians, we are called to be the light of the world. Part of that light is having peace and contentment during trials. When we understand the gravity of the pandemic but exhibit true inner joy and calm we can be a steadying force on those around us.
Let’s take this opportunity to do acts of kindness and treat people with love. We should go out of our way to give comfort and aid. Some practical ways to do this is looking for chances to share with those who are in need or paying a bill for someone who has lost a job.
As people who are blessed with the security of knowing the God who is in control, let us find ways to live in such a manner that we spread love, joy, peace, and hope wherever we go to whoever we meet. Let’s be contagious in all the right ways.
Almighty Lord, You are the sovereign God. Your children are safe in Your hands. Cause us to spread Your peace and love to the world around us.
