Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Being pure in heart means that one’s desires, thoughts, intentions, and decisions are pleasing to God. It is a heart that loves the Lord and loves His ways. It is a heart that has been transformed by the Holy Spirit to be conformed to the image of Christ.
After one becomes a Christian, the Holy Spirit begins to work in our spiritual heart. He convicts us of wrong and shows us what is right. If we follow His guidance then slowly but surely the evil desires and ways of this world fade away and are replaced by the love of God. We become new creations.
While it is the Holy Spirit doing the transforming work it takes great diligence on our part. We must take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) because not only are we accustomed to the world’s ways but we have an enemy who is actively trying to sabotage the work the holy Spirit is doing in us. But if we are faithful to read God’s Word, learn what he wants, and follow His leading then our hearts will be refined and purified.
As our hearts become pure we will begin to see God. Our eyes will be open to the work God is doing around us. We will see Him in the lives of others. We will see Him working in and through us. Eventually, we will see Him face to face.
Psalm 24:3-5 Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully. They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their salvation.
