Matthew 11:7-10

Matthew 11:7-10 ESV As they went away, Jesus began speaking to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see?  A reed shaken by the wind?  What then did you go out to see?  A man dressed in soft clothing?  Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.  What then did you go out to see?  A prophet?  Yes, I tell you more than a prophet.  This is he of whom it is written, “Behold, I send a messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.”

Jesus asked the crowd, “What did you go out to see?”  It was an important question then and remains an important question today.  What drew people to John the Baptist?  Was it his fine clothes or his social influence?  No, people went to hear John speak because he was preaching God’s message with authority.

For 400 years, God had been silent.  The people had the scriptures, what we now call the Old Testament, but God had stopped speaking once He gave the last message to Malachi.  Can you imagine no new revelation from God for four centuries?  Now God was speaking again and the people were desperate to hear what He was saying.  Even though some of them didn’t like the message, they still came to hear it.

So Jesus question echoes today, “What draws you?”  When you go to church, what are you going to see?  Is it a stylish preacher with a well-crafted sermon?  Is it a great worship leader who has a couple of albums to his/her credit?  Is it an impressive menu of programs and activities?  Or is it the Word of God being preached with power and authority?  There is nothing wrong with style or talent or programs as long as God is speaking.  Sadly though, many Christians choose their church based on other criteria than God’s Word.

John’s message was simple, repent because Jesus was coming.  Well, Jesus is coming again, and I believe it is soon.  Christians need to be examining themselves to make sure they are ready to meet God face to face.  We need pastors/teachers who are preaching God’s unadulterated message of purity and holiness.  This message is not popular today, but John never worried about popularity and neither should the men who shepherd us.

Lord God, teach us with Your truth.  Even if it is difficult to hear at times, give us Your Word so we will know what You are saying.
