When times are good, any god might suffice. When times get tough, that is when a tough God is needed. Right now many people are discovering just how wimpy their god(s) is. How does one know if their god is weak? Check your fear level. If you are afraid because you don’t have confidence that the deity you worship is stronger than your situation, then you have a weak god.
The current COVID-19 pandemic has exposed a number of weakling gods. People whose god is money are fearful of a stock market collapse or maybe just losing their job. They are left trying to find ways to protect their god rather than feeling secure that their god can protect them. Those who worship a substance they abuse are afraid that their supply may soon be cut off. Hedonists are afraid that their sources of pleasure will be stripped away. Many people with various gods are afraid that their very life may be taken away.
The great thing about worshiping the God of the Bible is the freedom from fear. We can be confident that He is fully able to keep us safe from any danger. If God has a different agenda, then we have the comfort of knowing that eternal life in paradise awaits the ending of this earthly existence. There is nothing to be afraid of.
For Christians who find themselves fearful at this time, I urge them to examine their beliefs to see if their God is truly the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Sadly, many people believe they are following God when in reality they worship a god of their own creation. This happens when they pick and choose what they will believe rather than letting the Bible dictate the truth to them.
The current pandemic is a reality. Tragically, people have died. It may result in dire economic repercussions. Christians should not stick their head in the sand and ignore the situation. However, as with every situation, we should be certain that God is fully in control. Since He is stronger than the virus and stronger than any economic ramifications, He is strong enough to hold us securely. When we are certain of God’s sovereignty, fear melts away.
Let us live boldly so the world will see God for the mighty fortress that He is.
Almighty God, You are awesome. You are my Healer, my Protector, and my Treasure. Guide me so that I will always be safe in Your will.
