Matthew 19:10-12

Matthew 19:10 – 12 ESV The disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” But He said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”

Marriage is hard!

In previous verses, Jesus had laid down a hard line against divorce. He said it shouldn’t happen but seemed to leave an opening in the event of marital infidelity. Jesus’ stance was probably shocking to many in the audience. Even Jesus’ disciples were taken aback by the blunt truth that Jesus said. In verse ten, they basically say, “If divorce isn’t an option, it is better not to get married.”

Jesus doesn’t contradict them, but points out that it is physically difficult for most people to not have a sexual partner. Marriage is more than just sex, but sex is the only aspect of a relationship that God requires marriage for. Technically, two people could be fully committed to each other and enjoy a platonic companionship without ever getting married.

Let’s get back to the concept that marriage is not easy. It is basically two flawed individuals agreeing to become one. For a marriage to succeed, it takes hard work, perseverance, commitment, and forgiveness. Both members of the couple need to follow the biblical commandment, “In humility consider others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 3:2).

It means considering the desires of another to be more important that your own desires. The needs of another to be more important than your own needs. If Christians treat their spouse this way, their marriage become a living testimony of God’s grace in their life. No wonder the devil actively seeks to destroy marriages.

Thank you, Lord, for my wife and the gift she is. Grant us the strength and humility to live in a manner that our marriage becomes a witness for You.
